National Wilderness Preservation System
Wilderness benefits all of us and must be protected
In 1964, Congress established the National Wilderness Preservation System under the Wilderness Act. Wilderness is found in 44 states and contributes to the ecological, economic and social health of our country.
- Clean Water and Air - America's cities depend on water that flows from WILDERNESS, and we breathe air that is cleansed by plants growing there. Pollution decreases water and air quality that people, plants and animals rely on.
- Wildlife Habitat - WILDERNESS protects natural processes, like fire, needed to sustain wildlife habitat and ensure rich biodiversity. Wildlife is threatened by non-native species, pollutants, and the suppression of natural processes.
- Recreational Activities - More than 12 million people visit WILDERNESS each year to hike, boat, fish, ride horses, raft, ski and take pictures. Visitors must be aware that high use of sensitive areas threatens the integrity of wilderness.
- Sustainable Economy - WILDERNESS areas help to sustain local and regional economies and support many high quality jobs. Diminishing wilderness character threatens the far-reaching economic benefits of wilderness.
- America's Legacy - WILDERNESS is part of America's heritage and is passed as a legacy to our children by many who will never visit wilderness, yet value its undisturbed quality. Failure to preserve the untrammeled and natural conditions of these areas threatens our legacy.
The federal wilderness managing agencies, together with American citizens, must protect wilderness to ensure that future generations can enjoy its diverse benefits.
